Number Porting: How to Keep Your Number When Switching Providers

One of the biggest fears businesses have when switching VoIP providers is losing their phone number. It's usually unfounded. Number porting is a standard process — but it has steps people skip that cause problems.

What porting actually means:

Your phone number belongs to you, not your provider. Porting transfers it from your current provider to a new one. The number stays the same. Calls start routing through the new provider on the cutover date.

What you need to start:

— Your current account number and PIN with the existing provider

— A signed Letter of Authorization (your new provider supplies this)

— The exact billing name and address on the current account

Common mistakes that delay porting:

Submitting mismatched information. The name on the LOA must match the name on the current account exactly. One typo can cause a rejection and restart the process.

Canceling service before porting completes. If you close your current account first, you lose the number. Always wait for porting confirmation before canceling.

Not testing before the cutover. On the day of porting, calls should route through the new provider. Test immediately — don't find out there's an issue on a Monday morning.

Typical timeframes:

Local numbers: 3–10 business days

Toll-free numbers: 5–15 business days

International numbers: varies significantly by country

The process is straightforward when the paperwork is right the first time.
